Drawings for Sculpture
One of the standards I look to achieve as a contemporary artist is to somehow reflect our times. Maybe this piece does not directly do that, but this artwork would never have come to be 15 or 20 years ago. It has only been by using 3d printers and technology that this particular work came to be.
I have to publicly thank the New York art critic Jerry Saltz for one of his Face Book humorous rants. This time mimicking Donald Trumps - Make America Great Again tout. His particular subject served this time to inspire. I’d been playing with Jerry’s phrase of ‘Make the art world great again’ when I stumbled onto a process that would allow me to transform my drawings into a sculpture using a few 3D computer programs.
In pure visual terms, these new sculptures are probably the most visually aligned with my two dimensional works. They are sculptures that are drawings. In my entire career that has been focused on a love of drawing at it’s core, these works more than most, hit home.
I’d been writing backwards and forwards in my paintings and drawings for years. Most times writing, right over what has just been written. In this way, the words become just dancing energetic lines rather than meant to be read.
This is the first sculptural incarnation of this new process. And like many artworks whose ideas have come as a first, a series then seems to flow.
