This sculpture like many of my sculptures upon first glance may seem rather traditional, but comes full speed into the contemporary art world.


I remember exactly where I was when I conceived of this work.  I was driving from Santa Fe, New Mexico to Colorado, mind wondering.  I remember thinking of Rene Magritte’s famous painting called,  "Ceci n'est pas une pipe”,  (This is not a pipe). Playing with the notion of that work, I took it to the next level.


In charting my own path as a contemporary artist, I have always studied what has come before and asked what can I contribute, add or change to be in the dialogue of art history and how can I address our particular times.


On the underside of this work is carved  Magrittes’ words in French, “This is not a pipe”, and I added.........This is a pencil.
