This sculpture upon first glance seems rather traditional, but shifts full speed into the contemporary art world upon closer inspection.
The initial idea as most of my work came from a confluence of ideas that culminated into one piece. Like most pieces, they are initially materialized as either a sketch or a little maquette. Inspiration initially came from a phrase, command or first position in Yoga called Samestetti meaning equal standing. Equal weight is distributed between both feet and even within the entire surface of each foot.
Also in the yoga world, there is the notion of male and female sides of the body and the necessity of a balance of the masculine and feminine. Many of the problems in the world can be traced to a gross imbalance of the masculine and feminine.
I made a sculpture of feet because they are the perfect metaphor for equal standing - and the necessity for a more equal standing between men and women in the world.
I’d also been aware of people being giants in their fields. I’ve used those giants as inspiration for my own development. The proportions of this particular sculpture are as though a 10’ person.
Up close, this sculpture is carved/drawn into the surface in a graffiti like manor in the same way that I may scrawl across a painted canvas - my many ideas fused . Some of what is graffitied into the sculpture backwards and forwards is: Walk in Peace, Equal standing, man and woman, Land of the Giants, equal, etc.
