This was an extra graphite airplane I had in the studio from another piece i’d made. It was one of the first of the graphite sculptures that I painted on. My thinking was that your typical yellow pencil or even no wood pencils had a painted coating other than the tip that was drawing.
The impulse to paint on the sculpture seemed a step closer to closing the gap between my painting and sculpture.
The idea of painting on things was not new to my work.
