In 1991 I had just invented the method to cast graphite for one of drawing machines. It was a new medium to work in to make sculptures. Artist were drawing with graphite or dusting their sculptures with graphite like Ursula von Rydingsvard, but the method had not been invented as of that time. I was also just beginning to gain recognition as an artist in the top galleries in Soho, NYC. This piece seemed fitting in a very American way. It was my turn up to bat as an artist of the next generation. It is what I was up too. So, “UP II” became the second solid graphite piece I’d made.
