ALL TOGETHER NOW

“BOX OF PAINT”

In the 1980’ I made a second attempt to synthesize all my different stylistic painting explorations.  I took all my tubes of paint and squeezed them out onto a giant pile on my palette and mixed it all together.  This seemed the most immediate, quicker and direct route to conceptually mix all styles, ideas, and everything all together.

The paint mixture was then applied to these three canvases.

I did not know when I took that impulsive step of mixing every tube of paint, that it would result in a very rich black.  I was not into making black paintings like Ad Reinhardt and others that had explored that territory. Black was something you wore as a New Yorker, but never painted with.

Also, interested in somehow expanding into sculpture, these paintings, so dark seemed to  need something else.  To one, I added the sound of a motorcycle.  To another I added a headlight from a motorcycle and the other remained as it was.  It was not long after this work that I turned in the direction of what was to become my kinetic drawings machines.
