INTERCHANGEABLE CANVASES

In the 1980’ I I’d attempted to find my own style of painting after quite a few years of exploring different styles.  In one attempt to synthesize all my different explorations, I literally threw everything (All styles) onto three adjoining canvases.  Getting only so far and not knowing where to go, the task seemed daunting.  So, I took all my paint tubes and squeezed them out onto a giant pile on my palette and mixed all the colors together in a giant pile.   (Box of Paint III)   On some level I felt as though I had in fact, mixed everything together - not just paint but ideas and all.

This was also the first time I began to play with interchangeable canvas placement.  I believe I never finished this painting, or felt as though I’d synthesized all my explorations into one style but in effect, I had at the time.  This idea of interchangeable canvases would become a central idea for future work. and way of working.
